Groundworks for a new Secondary School
Challenges
Site Manager, Gary, said the most difficult part of this project was the works for installing the Fin Drains because it was time consuming
Our team began with reducing the levels of the ground, which produced a significant amount of muck-away. With our lorry, plant and hired in muckshifters, we removed approximately 2000m3 off site.
Pile caps were one of the methods used for the foundations, which meant that an out-sourced piling rig drilled down up to 10m deep. We then filled these voids with stone and concrete.
Another method used was ground beams with approximately 55 tonne of steel cages which were fabricated on site.
We also undertook the foul and storm drainage, including a large attenuation tank underneath the playground and Aco channels. For the finishes, we completed the kerbs, staircases, paving and tarmac.
Whilst levelling the ground, we found a soft spot. Luckily, the machine was pulled out with no problem.
Lack of space on site created some issues. Due to the existing school boundaries, sometimes it was a tight squeeze for lorries and machines to work around the school.
