A barn conversion with character
Challenges
Creating a linkway between our clients existing home and the new barn conversion presented unique challenges to ensure no water ingress occurred due to multiple roof pitches and angles.
Once derelict and dilapidated, this old barn has been given a new lease of life.
The finishing of this project is far from typical. Externally, the striking features are the sweeping stone steps, dormer window and the almost black corrugated cladding on the building. Internally, the black feature wall from floor to ceiling, the woodwork, stonework and bold mustard kitchen is what draws attention.
The team began with the demolition of the existing stone building. From there, the foundations were excavated, and foundations poured, ready for the blockwork. A large gable end was built in stonework creating a stunning internal backdrop for the mustard coloured kitchen. Steel frames were required in the linkway and the bedroom, specifically due to the impressive dormer that needed to be constructed.
The timber ceiling was created by one of our own, who used Douglas Fir timber to produce a rubbed back whitewashed finish, providing a light and cool finish to the room. Externally, one of the largest undertakings was fitting the anthracite corrugated sheets which have provided a modern finish to what was a derelict building. Seer also completed the plumbing, hard landscaping and built the beautiful stone steps to go into the garden.
One significant challenge was fitting the tailor-made flashings surrounding windows to guarantee no water ingress, but also to ensure it met with the client’s aesthetical requirements.
The bespoke staircase completed by Site Manager, Shane Palmer, finished with Idigbo timber balustrade proved to be worth the effort.
